A comparison is then made between modelled and measured residual indent profiles. The plasticity parameters are then iteratively updated until the best agreement between profiles is achieved. These plasticity parameters relate to the stress-strain curve via a constitutive equation, which is used to describe the plasticity. An example of an indent profile and its corresponding stress strain curve is in Fig.2.
\n

\n    <span\n      class=\"gatsby-resp-image-wrapper\"\n      style=\"position: relative; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; max-width: 750px; \"\n    >\n      <a\n    class=\"gatsby-resp-image-link\"\n    href=\"/static/4b2f34523598143d46b6c35af535d2f3/0e904/indent-profile.png\"\n    style=\"display: block\"\n    target=\"_blank\"\n    rel=\"noopener\"\n  >\n    <span\n    class=\"gatsby-resp-image-background-image\"\n    style=\"padding-bottom: 38.297872340425535%; position: relative; bottom: 0; left: 0; background-image: url('data:image/png;base64,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'); background-size: cover; display: block;\"\n  >\n  <img\n        class=\"gatsby-resp-image-image\"\n        alt=\"Two graphs showing indent profile, and stress strain curve\"\n        title=\"Figure 2 (a) an indent profile and (b) its corresponding stress strain curve.\"\n        src=\"/static/4b2f34523598143d46b6c35af535d2f3/1d69c/indent-profile.png\"\n        srcset=\"/static/4b2f34523598143d46b6c35af535d2f3/4dcb9/indent-profile.png 188w,\n/static/4b2f34523598143d46b6c35af535d2f3/5ff7e/indent-profile.png 375w,\n/static/4b2f34523598143d46b6c35af535d2f3/1d69c/indent-profile.png 750w,\n/static/4b2f34523598143d46b6c35af535d2f3/78797/indent-profile.png 1125w,\n/static/4b2f34523598143d46b6c35af535d2f3/0e904/indent-profile.png 1384w\"\n        sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\"\n        style=\"width:100%;height:100%;margin:0;vertical-align:middle;position:absolute;top:0;left:0;\"\n        loading=\"lazy\"\n        decoding=\"async\"\n      />\n  \n    \n
Figure 2 (a) an indent profile and (b) its corresponding stress strain curve.
\n

\n
The FEM computations and conversion to a stress strain curve take place fully within the software of the Benchtop Plastometer, without any need for the user to have FEM knowledge or background.
